  7. Abstract:
  8. In this dissertation, Martin Heidegger and Andrew Feenberg's views on the current technological atmosphere and their approaches to escaping from this atmosphere will be considered. Critical Theory of Technology is the title that Feenberg refers to it as his own thoughts upshot regarding technology. This title explicitly indicates Feenberg's background in Frankfurt School Critical Theory. In Critical Theory of Technology the problems of the current technological atmosphere are revealed by concerning values in technical designs. Feenberg not only focuses on undesirable consequences of the current technological development, but also considers emancipation from the current technological atmosphere on the basis of democratic values. He considers the possibility of an alternative modernity that can be established on the basis of a wider range of values and brings forth the emancipation. On the other hand, Heidegger analyzes the present technological world in a more fundamental level and considers the dangers of modern technology from a different point of view. Heidegger's concern is the essence of modern technology, i.e., the dominant ontological understanding of beings in the technological age, which has affected all aspects of human life. From the viewpoint of Heidegger, such a understanding is related to the historical destining of Being. Heidegger considers the duty of human beings in our current age as preparation of readiness for the advent of a saving God. Releasement toward things and meditative thinking prepare us for the emergence of a post-technological age. In the last chapter, the differences between Heidegger and Feenberg's views about modern technology and salvation from the current technological atmosphere will be considered. Finally, it will be explained that considering the differences between their attitudes regarding the dangers of the dominant technological atmosphere, the Feenberg's approach belongs to the technological paradigm which Heidegger criticizes
