Synthesis and Optical Properties of Titanium Nitride Nanoparticles Prepared by Arc Discharge Method in Liquid Nitrogen

  8. Production of nano-particles using arc-discharge method in a liquid nitrogen environment is a proficient way of forming nitride Particles whose formation by other methods is difficult and expensive. Amongstall, Titanium nitride (TiN) is of significant importance because of its high formidability and its optical and electrical metal properties due to plasmonic electrons. This research studies the production of titanium nitride Nano-particles using arc-discharge method and investigates optical properties and features, specially dielectric constant and optical extinction coefficient. Modeling interband Transitions is also discussed to revise Drude's electron theory. First, in experimental segment, Nanoparticles were built using arc-discharge method. Next, the effect of current on the size was studied. Characterization of TEM, SEM and DLS proved that cubic crystal particles were formed at a size of about 10 nm.According to DSL results,by increasing the current the size of formed particles will increase. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of titanium-nitride bounding. Considering the importance of TiN optical applications, characterization of UV-Vis was then performed for various densities. Utilizing these results in Lambert-beer Equation, extinction coefficient was obtained as a scale for absorption and scattering of descending light beam. In order to perform optical modeling, the extinction obtained from experimental results was compared to the equation resulted from Mie theory. Then, from curve fitting, real and imaginary dielectric coefficients of titanium-nitride particles were obtained. Comparing the results with Drude's theory, the essential correction for this theory, titled as Interband Transitions was suggested, which was in an appropriate agreement with the simulations performed by the others
