  7. Abstract:
  8. Our surrounding environment has valuable information about our life. We live in technological societies where we are leaving digital footprints in, continuously. Growing development and popularity of mobile phones, has turned them into the most important global sensors. Mobile phone tracking via GPS points is one of the data types which can be collected from these sensors and used for traffic monitoring, intelligence traffic control and travel time estimation.
In order to use these devices, we need to collect data, detect transportation mode and estimate travel time. By evaluation of previous works, we can feel the need to a comprehensive approach for detecting transportation mode of mobile network elements in order to achieve travel time estimation which completely preserves privacy. In this thesis, we have proposed an architecture for travel time estimation which uses reported GPS points gathered from GPS-equipped mobile phones. Privacy preservation is fully considered in this approach as well. With introducing the new concept of Virtual Trip Zone (VTZ) for the first time, we are able to detect walk or non-walk transportation mode of mobile phone instantaneously by limited number of reported GPS points and without any need for previous data.
We have gathered a dataset for evaluation purposes and classified walk and non-walk transportation modes with an accuracy over 98%
