  7. Abstract:
  8. Concrete dams are important nations infra structures. They store water for different purposes such as irrigation, water supply, flood control, electric power, recreation and improvement of navigation. Safety of concrete dams is a major challenge for the owners. As a result, concrete dam’s behavior when subjected to different load condition especially an earthquake ground motion is a concern which may cause some damage. It is needed to determine concrete gravity dam’s response under different load condition. One of the important factors for determining concrete dam’s response is foundation properties and its behavior under seismic loading. A finite element model consisting of dam-reservoir-foundation was considered to properly model the foundation behavior. A program was developed to include a suitable constitutive model for foundation. An elasto-plastic formulation was used to model the foundation. Mohr-Coulomb model was used for the yield function and potential function. This model only applies to the foundation and for the body of the dam, smeared model was used. After modeling the foundation, two records of earthquake were applied and the results were studied. By studying the results, it was found that there are cracks at the crest and hill of the dam. By studying the results, the damage for the body of the dam was decreased when we apply the elasto-plastic model of the foundation
