Nonlinear Seismic Analysis of Steel Moment Resisting Frames Considering Soil-Structure Interaction Effect with the Endurance Time Method

  8. Dominance over the seismic behavior of structures leads to proper design and the cost reduction of structures according to the structures demand performance. In this regard, the issue of performance-based seismic design of structures has been proposed in which the nonlinear behavior of structures is the basis for the design and evaluation of structures during earthquakes. Moreover, regarding of soil under the structures will change the elastic and inelastic behavior of structures; also, the effects of soil-structure interaction on the seismic performance of structures should be considered to achieve the real behavior of structures. Hence, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of steel structures considering soil-structure interaction effects. To achieve this goal, the Endurance Time method, a new method for the analysis of seismic performance evaluation of structures, has been selected. The Endurance Time (ET) method is a time history based dynamic analysis in which structures are subjected to gradually intensifying excitations and their performances are judged based on their responses at various excitation levels. The soil beneath the structure is considered as a homogeneous elastic half space and is modeled using the concept of Cone Models by elastic springs. Damage criteria such as plastic hinge rotations in the Endurance Time analysis and nonlinear time history analysis under natural earthquake records are compared, which shows the high accuracy of the Endurance Time method in the seismic analysis of slender moment resisting frames. Also, The Endurance Time method is used to evaluate the effect of soil-structure interaction on the behavior of steel moment resisting frames. The results show the reduction in average plastic hinge rotation of beams under the effect of soil-structure interaction in comparison to the fixed base frames. In addition, if the frame slenderness ratio is more than 2.5, the maximum story drift and column plastic hinge rotation will be increased under the effect of soil-structure interaction in the above stories
