Influence of Travel Time of Ready-Mixed Concrete Truck Mixers on the Performance of Advanced Concretes: Case Study of Variations in Nanosilica Addition Time and Superplasticizer Content

In massive construction projects such as construction of high-rise buildings, bridges, and concrete pavements, engineers strive to set up an on-site concrete batching plant; however in most cases, due to the lack of space availability, it is not possible to do so.Therefore, in order to procure high quality concrete, ready mixed concrete suppliers are sought. The notable management point is the distance between the ready mixed concrete plant and the construction site. The investigations show that the increased hauling time of ready-mixed concrete could significantly influence the quality of produced concrete. This issue is of more importance in the urban areas (e.g Tehran) as the traffic congestions and multiple stops and long delays slow the hauling process. The introduction of nanotechnology to the concrete industry outstandingly broadened the horizon of this industry. One of the most important effects of nanotechnology on the concrete industry is the utilization of nano-materials as ultra-improving agents for the performance of cementitious products. Even application of low contents of nano-materials influence on the microstructure and therefore, it would be sufficient to witness significant improvements in the concrete properties and leads to the production of advanced concretes. According to the above mentioned issues, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of travel time of concrete truck mixers on the performance of advanced concrete in the city of Tehran. Firstly, in the pre-experimental stage, advanced concretes were produced by incorporating two types of nano-particles with high efficiency. Then, the experimental stage was followed by studying the effect of travel time on workability, strength, and durability of normal and advanced concretes. Also, for different travel time, the optimal nanosilica addition time and the superplasticizer dosage were calculated.In the field stage, concrete hauling information in the Tehran city was collected by inquiring from the ready-mixed concrete plants. Afterwards, data bank of the current study consisting of the gathered data from pre-experimental, experimental and field stages wasestablished. Subsequently, the result of each stage was analyzed by statistical software separately. Finally, some useful recommendations were demonstrated to develop the applications of advanced concretes in ready-mixed concrete industry and especially in urban areas like Tehran
