  7. Abstract:
  8. City of Karaj with 2 million population used to enjoy very clean and accommodating air and environment . This congenial condition was due to agricultural and gardening activities of the local population . This way of life has undergone a profound change due to a change in the economic activities of the local population from farming and agriculture to industrial activities . And this has brought particulate matter wich has been exacerbated in the recent years . With the additional onslaught of the dust storms coming from the neighboring countries due to drying up of rivers and lagoons .The main object of this work was to obtain the spectrum of the PM and the additional component of PM that has been brought to the city by dust storms . Air sampling at the main cardinal directiona were carried out for the period April 2012-March 2013 on Whatman41 filter papers . The collected dust particles were subsequently analyzed with INAA and AAS methods . 33 elements were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively . There were Al , As , Ba , Br , Ca , Cd , Ce , Cl , Co , Cr , Cu , Dy , Fe , Hf , I , La , Lu , Mg , Mn , Na , Ni , Pb , Sb , Sc , Sm , Sr , Th , Ti , U , Yb , V , W , Zn . Sixteen element of the above list is Al , Ba , Cd , Ce , Dy , Fe , Hf , La , Lu , Mg , Mn , Sc , Sm , Ti , Th and U had the maximum concentration during the dust storms .The out put of some 29 factory stacks were obtained and used as input to the EPA code AERMOD . from we obtained the concentration of the TSP at the four air sampling stationa . comparison of the AERMOD with our sampling results showed similar pattern during the normal days . This similarity disappeared during the onslaught of the dust storms
