  7. Abstract:
  8. Today steel tubular systems are used more than before, especially in recent years. A difficulty with this type of systems is making beam to column connections using bolts due to no access to holes of bolts from the inside of tube or hollow circular column. Reverse channel connection is devised and introduced to prevail this problem. Access to holes in this connection is from the inside of channel. In this connection, the web of the channel is connected to steel beam using bolts and the two legs of channel is welded to face of tube column.
This type of connection does include some innovations; not too many researchers work on different versions of this connection. This thesis provides an extensive parametric study on “Moment-Rotation”, as well as stiffness and ultimate moment carried by this type of connection, using finite element method. On the other hand, using an analytical approach, the effect of each component on behavior of connection will be considered, separately. Also connection will be classified to rigid, semi-rigid or pinned connection according to different codes, such as AISC. Finite element analysis will be performed through ABAQUS software; and results shall be verified through comparison with some experimental data by L. Xue in School of mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering in university of Manchester. Moment-Rotation diagrams will be calculated under monotonic loading as L. Xue used in his paper. Materials used in this thesis are non-linear material for steels, bolts and welds. In addition, the analytical model is prepared and implemented, using component method to evaluate the initial stiffness of connection
