Modeling and Specification of Regional PM10 Origins in the Metropolises of Iran

  8. Since Iran is a part of Afro-Asian belt of deserts, 21 percent of its area belongs to desert lands. By the increasing number of dust storms in western adjacent countries dust particle concentration’s value has been critical. PM10 modeling and finding out dust origins can extremely help to manage methods by decision-makers to control dust from the origin. HYSPLIT modeling tool is benefited to get to this aim. In this study metropolises which hardly confront air pollution according to EPA statement were selected. HYSPLIT was calibrated and validated by comparing the results with measurement stations. According to the point that that particles were transported from western parts of Iran, western adjacent countries were divided into 5 parts and it had contributed in each metropolis. Variation of concentration with threshold friction velocity was evaluated. Also variation of concentration with threshold friction velocity (the velocity at which wind erosion starts) was evaluated. There were few studies concerning this context. It had been modeled how the desiccation of Urmia would influence its environment. The correlation coefficients for evaluation showed that HYSPLIT had an acceptable potential for modeling. The source appropriation showed that Iraq and the eastern part of Syria with more than 70% of contribution had the most influence on dust concentration. Also it was figured out that 10% increase in threshold friction velocity would dramatically decrease PM10 concentration (almost 52 percent). It recommends proceeding methods such as desertification to increase soil humidity in order to decrease threshold friction velocity. Investigation of Urmia lake showed that its desiccation would mostly affects west Azerbaijan and after that it has considerable influence on east Azerbaijan in Iran
