  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, reaching higher speed in marine crafts and underwater vehicles mostly requires a modern propulsor with high efficiency and enhanced cavitation performance. Because of these requirements, numerous researches for developing the existing propulsion systems and invention of new systems have been conducted in recent years. One of the most sophisticated and developed propulsion systems that have high hydrodynamic efficiency and high cavitation performance and low acoustic signature is pumpjet. This propulsor contains a rotor, stator and a duct that surrounds two other parts. Stator reduces the swirl of flow coming from rotor and thereby reduces the loss of energy. High cavitation performance in this system is due to high pressure region around rotor and less pressure variation than common screw propellers.
In this thesis, a numerical model based on finite volume method using commercial CFD code CFX, is employed for estimation of hydrodynamic characteristics and self propulsion point of an underwater vehicle with pumpjet propulsion system. In order to determine the self propulsion point of underwater vehicle, a set of simulations in different performing conditions have been carried out. Hydrodynamic coefficients such as thrust and torque coefficient curves of stator and rotor have been extracted. There has been good agreement between the simulations and a similar experiment results. This numerical model can be utilized in designing and further pumpjet development and optimization procedures
