  7. Abstract:
  8. As the applications of wireless sensor networks are expanding at an increasing rate, design of these networks so that they conform to the requirements of a specific application is considered to be a major challenge. Regarding to the specific application, network designers consider various suitable parameters to improve and then to enhance the efficiency of the network. Parameters included are such as area coverage, lifetime, reliability and etc which can significantly improve with the precise placement of nodes. Node localization problem in wireless sensor networks aiming at improvement of the performance parameters has been solved by different methods. In this thesis, in order to solve this problem we apply two algorithms; the PSO algorithm, and HBB-BC algorithm using a fuzzy framework. As objectives of the problem, we consider improving the network coverage and the lifetime simultaneously. Similar to the PSO algorithm, HBB-BC algorithm is known to be a powerful and effective method in terms of high accuracy, fast convergence, and easy implementation. Using the capabilities of the PSO algorithm, our proposed method helps the BB-BC algorithm in better exploration of the search space. To evaluate the efficiency of HBB-BC algorithm, we solve node localization problem first as a single objective problem considering network coverage and life time separately, and second as a bi-objective problem aiming at simultaneous increase in network coverage and life time. In the implementation of both PSO and HBB-BC algorithms in the bi-objective case, a fuzzy framework is considered to solve the problem. The simulation results reveal the efficiency of the two algorithms in both cases while HBB-BC algorithm in terms of response time, is two times faster than the PSO algorithm in finding the solution
