  7. Abstract:
  8. Nowadays, base isolation technique is widely used in the old and new structures, so it is necessary to assess the seismic performance of base-isolated buildings probabilistically, it is also essential to assess their performance during near-source versus far-field earthquakes.
Developing the fragility curves is useful probabilistic method for the seismic assessment of structures. These curves define the probability of exceedance of different damage states for a given level of seismic intensity parameter. Former investigations has been done to assess the seismic behavior of base isolation systems consider base isolated highway bridge piers.
In this thesis fragility curves are derived for 2-D fixed-base three-, seven- and twelve- story reinforced concrete buildings designed for hospital utilization using OPENSEES. The LRB type isolator has been designed for these structures and the fragility curves are derived for these base isolated structures, in order to evaluate the effect of isolators in reducing the vulnerability of structures. Four sets of earthquake accelerograms recorded on soil type C & D and near-source and far-field locations are selected to develop the fragility curves of this type of buildings. Cumulative absolute velocity (CAV) is selected as seismic intensity measure parameter (IM); Park-Ang damage index is used to obtain the vulnerability of RC structures and shear strain is used to assess the damage of isolators. The damage measure of isolated buildings is calculated using combination of these two damage indices. Structural uncertainty is considered using their statistical distribution and Monte-Carlo method. Through processing the resulted curves, it is clear that base isolation has reduced the damage probability of exceedance significantly in all buildings during the earthquakes considered. Near-field earthquake has significant effect on isolated buildings. These fragility curves can be useful for seismic risk analysis and rehabilitation decision making
