  7. Abstract:
  8. Fire spread in a road tunnel and its transmission from one vehicle to another was investigated numerically in this study. FDS was used as an open-source, free CFD software. Two boxes close to the car’s dimensions were modeled in a 40m long tunnel and fire transmission from one to another was considered. Ignition temperature was assigned to the second box’s surface as the condition for its ignition start and longitudinal ventilation was applied to the tunnel. At each case, ignition time of the second box was captured. Effects of ventilation velocity, HRR, distance, tunnel height and slope of the tunnel parameters were considered on the ignition time of the second box. Moreoveras a case study, fire spread in Tohid Tunnel was investigated which is a twin tube tunnel including an unusual geometry. Results showed that in some situations fire may pass through the columns separating the tubes and so, damage both tubes. In order to solve the problem, existence of a wall between the tubes was suggested. In addition, the tunnel was evaluated in smoke propagation aspect. Smoke movement in the tunnel was considered in the revised tunnel and compared to the without wall tunnel. Then a better solution including a wall that has been prolonged to the portals out of the tunnel was suggested. Velocity data including velocity vectors in tubes and stramtraces at portals for all three geometries were captured and evaluated. Finally, it was concluded that the third geometry is the best for extracting the smoke from the tunnel
