  7. Abstract:
  8. Three dimensional analyses have been carried out for predicting the behavior of the jointed rock slope of the abutments of the bridge which is proposed to be constructed across the river Karun4 in Iran using 3DEC. The rock sloping at 500 to 600 are composed of highly jointed rock mass and the joint spacing and orientation are varying at different locations. Since 3DEC is a three-dimensional numerical code, utilizes a Lagrangian calculation scheme to model large movements and deformations of a blocky system, allows for modeling of large movements and rotations, including complete detachment of rigid or deformable discrete blocks has been utilized for the analysis. The analysis has been carried out in two stages. To simulate the prevailing rock mass conditions at the site first, an initial static loading is applied in the numerical model by introducing the joint sets in the rock slope. Then the pier and arch loads were applied on the existing model. For critical observations of displacements, stresses and velocity various monitoring points were installed in the model. The resultant values observed confirms the stability of the rock slope. This Thesis presents use of the recent developments in the discontinum numerical codes in detail about the methodology adopted, properties selected and the results obtained in the analysis. The study provides an illustration of how the geo-mechanical properties of a rock mass can be integrated in a discontinue rock slope model. This model has helped to better understand the dynamics of the rockslide when subjected to static loads
