  8. The current state of restructuring in the electric power industry has forced power companies to maintain and enhance service reliability and quality while controlling associated costs. Therefore these companies often seek to improve operational performance, increase productivity and promote management of their assets to restrain production costs while satisfying customers’ needs. Maintenance of system components has great impacts on both service quality and also system costs. However, it has been proved that traditional maintenance strategies which have been implemented in electrical companies are inefficient. Thus, Managing maintenance procedures would help companies to reduce their costs while maintaining required reliability and reducing failure risks. As a consequence, this thesis is concentrated on the implementation of a modern maintenance strategy on a power transmission infrastructure. In this regard, Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) approach was adopted since it proved to be effective in maintenance management in other industries. In recent years, great effort has been perused to implement RCM techniques in distribution, transmission and generation systems. However, due to the high complexity of transmission system, available methods are not able to model the power transmission system particularly in the areas of protection and transmission substations. This is despite the fact that the transmission substation and protection systems have significant impact on system performance so they could affect the maintenance programs. To obviate this need, this thesis focused on providing comprehensive maintenance strategy for transmission based on reliability centered maintenance approach, so the impact of transmission substations and protection system has been considered for the first time
