  7. Abstract:
  8. In recent decades the use of FRP materials for strengthening structures has been developed extensively, thanks to their high strength, sufficient stiffness, high durablity, and ease of use. A great deal of research has been conducted on strengthening reinforced concrete beams and columns with FRP composites. By contrast, not many researches are performed on slabs, especially two-way slabs. In these few researches, the loading and boundary conditions are limited to simplest ones. Therefore, in this thesis, the focus of attention is on strengthening reinforced concrete slabs under various loads and boundary conditions using FRP composites.
In this thesis, first, FRP composites and their properties are introduced. Then, the related researches are discussed. After that, the theoretical points about finite element method are discussed followed by a breif explanation of different methods for analyzing reinforced concrete slabs. Next, the use of layered elements, which is the most suitable approach, is elaborated.
After getting familiar with theoretical base, verification is performed, using ABAQUS CAE. After that, various slabs with diverse type of loadings and boundary conditions are discussed and strengthened. The aim of strengthening is to provide 50 percent increase in load carrying capacity. These boundary conditions are simple, built-in, free edges, and their combinations. Loading is also applied as uniformly distributed and concentrated. In each case, the practical strengthening scheme is put forward and the properties of slabs before and after strengthening are compared. The obtained results indicate that strengthenin for 50 percent increase in load carrying capacity is accompanied by decrease in ultimate deflection, decrease in ductility and increase in initial stiffness
