  7. Abstract:
  8. Concentric and eccentric chevron braces are among the more economical lateral force resisting systems for structures. However, chevron braced systems are prone to concentration of damage in a single story and formation of soft stories when buckling occurs in the bracing elements. This leads to a gradual loss in the structural performance, particularly as the height of the structure increases. One of the most notable methods to alleviate this problem and improve the structural performance is the addition of zipper struts to concentrically chevron braced frames that are known to improve the distribution of plastic energy dissipation along the height of the structure. While this usually increases the rigidity of the structure, a reduction in the energy absorption capacity may result due to the reduced displacement response of the structure. On the other hand, compared to their concentric counterparts, eccentric chevron bracing usually shows a better energy dissipation capacity, which may lead to a better structural performance in most applications. In this study, it is attempted to improve the energy dissipation capacity and the overall dynamic performance of frames by combining eccentric chevron bracing with double zipper elements. For comparison purposes, various configurations of the braces and zipper struts have been investigated using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. The compared parameters include the energy absorption capacity before collapse, the input energy of the structure, and the relative drift and absolute acceleration. These studies show that the proposed arrangement involving eccentric chevron braced frames and zipper struts have clear advantages over the equivalent customary systems, mostly in terms of post-yielding stiffnes energy absorption capacity and dynamic performance
