  7. Abstract:
  8. Recent advancements in wireless communications and also a tendency to use low cost, tiny, and autonomous high performance products have led to the emergence of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). As the main source of power in a sensor node is a limited and irreplaceable battery, energy is the main important issue. Data aggregation, as an in-network processing method, is a promised technique aiming to conserve energy by reducing the number of packet transmissions through the network. It is a key, yet time-consuming functionality in WSNS, where we hold packets in intermediate nodes to promote aggregation efficiency. However, the requirement of real-time communications is becoming more and more important in emerging applications classified into two categories: event-driven and continuous data collection. In event-driven applications, it is very critical to deliver alarms about serious events in a timely manner so that an appropriate action can be taken in response. Here, outdated information would be irrelevant and even lead to negative effects on the system monitoring and control. Meanwhile, in continuous data collection, it is important to provide a guarantee on the delivery time as well as increase of data collection rate by minimizing the aggregation latency. The present dissertation introduces data aggregation as a fundamental issue in real-time WSNs and proposes two efficient (structure-free and structure-based) routing supported by new scheduling approaches for spatial and temporal convergence of packets, respectively, for both categories of applications. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate the superiority of our proposed approaches as well as our latency upper bound for real-time data aggregation in WSNs
