  7. Abstract:
  8. In recent years there have been a growing number of patients who are no more capable of leading an independent life, due to strokes, accident, or a variety of diseases. Thus, vast fields of physical rehabilitation have come into the attention of goverments and researchers. High costs of rehabilitation programs and their length on one hand, and the difficulties of commuting such patients to rehabilitation centers on the other hand, has made health department of various countries to look for alternative solutions. In this thesis, a computerized system has been designed and implemented in order to assess and guide patients in their rehabilitation excercises without needing any direct contact. One of the main objectives followed in this part of the project concerns building an affordable system to be used in patients’ homes. The system designed and implemented in this project utilizes the Kinect camera, which has been produced for the Microsoft xbox game console. The main advantages of this sensor include its low cost, simpleness, and reliability that help the final system to get closer to the goal of being used in patients’ homes. After choosing the sensor, its accuracy was calculated and its ability in deriving cinematic parameters such as velocity and acceleration was examined. Next, clinical tests were carried out in order to examine feedbacks of patients and doctors on the system, and also, to collect movement data from patients by the implemented systems. Based on the collected data, movement quality parameters were calculated for each patient and were then compared with each other. In addition, a simple classifier was trained to determine the status of a patient based on movement data. Eventually, the reliability of movement quality parameters calculated by Kinect was assessed. The examinations carried out through this thesis indicate that the Kinect camera has an acceptable ability in assessing the status of stroke patients and determining their trend of improvement
