  7. Abstract:
  8. To date various commercial systems were used in the gait analysis area. These systems have some difficulties for clinical use, such as being indwell, making trouble in movement and high prices. The Kinect sensor does not have problems of these systems. If the error of sensor is acceptable, Kinect sensor is a suitable choice for application in clinics. The possibility of utilization of the Kinect sensor as a gait analysis system has been studied in this research. The sensor errors in calculation of gait parameters for lower limb joints angle were computed. In previous researches the Kinect sensor error has been calculated for upper limb joints angle and the subject was standing motionless in front of the sensor. The Kinect sensor has also been used to record some identified motions on behalf of chiropractors. In researches which the Kinect sensor has been used for gait analysis, definination of hip joint angles differed from the one used in standard gait analysis systems. Also Kinect was unable to capture ankle joint angle properly and it accompanied particular errors. The aim of this study is to find how to calculate lower extremity joint angles more accurately in gait analysis with the help of Kinect system. Improvement in measurement of ankle joint angles is another challenge in this research. A careful study of important aspects in gait analysis systems was conducted and joint angles were determined on Kinect skeleton model by implementation of the method which is used in commercial motion capture systems. After registration and filtering the noise from the data, the angles of the joints of the ankles, knees, hip and pelvis using Kinect system and Vicon was calculated. In calculation of Kinect error the obtained values from the commercial motion capture system were considered as the true value. By doing multiple experiments, Kinect error in the calculation of the angle of each joint was obtained with the relation to gait speed and Kinect position. Then, with the help of Kinect depth sensor and infrared camera, a new method to improve the measurement of foot coordinates was presented by Kinect. According to the results, the best choice for the position of Kinect system is in front of subject. In this case the calculation error of knee flexsion/extension angle is 3 degrees and the registration error of hip felxsion/extension and abduction/adduction are respectively 2.8 and 3.6 degrees. By using proposed method in this study, the amount of ankle joint angle calculation error reduced from 9.1 to 3.1 degrees. Also the pelvice angles can be calculated with error of 3.2 degrees. Other findings pindicate that lower exterimity joint angles have little affiliation to the subject gait speed. The results prove the competency of the Kinect sensor as a gait analysis system for rehabilitation applications
