  7. Abstract:
  8. Hydro power is a clean energy resource which has numerous advantages over other renewable energy systems including competitiveness with fossil fuel systems, high reliability, considerable potential, and availability of technology. These advantages have drawn attention to hydropower systems. Small Hydro Power (SHP) systems can be used for supplying the demand of rural and remote areas where electricity network rarely exists. SHP may also provide an investment opportunity. Comprehensive analysis of design features and operation of SHP and management of risks involved requires development and application of reliable analytical tools. The present research aims at developing a model for optimal design of SHP systems considering the uncertainaties involved in availability of resources. Moreover, model validation required design of an experinmental stand which could enables simulation of the actual system. Hence, dimensionless numbers have been developed in the present work which provides a foundation for developing experinmental stand. Developed model has been used to identify the optimal design based on the criterion of minimum cost and maximum Net Present Value (NPV). Namar station in south-west of Amol city in Mazandaran province in Iran has been considered as a case study for demonstrating application of the model. Two distinct cases have been studied. Case one depicts demand supply with minimum cost and case two indicates maximum NPV in investment in SHP systems. Results of the application of model show the competitive advantage of the electricity generated by the SHP system over the grid electricity in different prices. Based on the calculations, the levelized cost of electricity was found to be 0.094 $/kWh in grid electricity price of 0.13 $/kWh. Increasing grid electricity price from 0.07 $/kWh to 0.19 $/kWh leads to an increase from 0.059 $/kWh to 0.14 $/kWh in the levelized cost of electricity. Net Present Value of investment in SHP systems in heads of 100, 200 and 550 meters was calculated to be 1.77, 3.86 and 11.46 Million Dollars respectively
