  7. Abstract:
  8. High efficiency and low-emission fuel cells have the capacity to replace fossil fuels for energy supply concerns. Solid oxide fuel cells operate in relatively high temperature and have power plant applications. Hence, they are acquainted to be coupled with cycle gas turbine to reduce the cost and increase the overall system efficiency. The control of these hybrid systems is so important. Due to the system nonlinearity and having more than one controlled variable, its control with classic methods would be difficult. The model based predictive control is used as an alternative to mitigate these difficulties. In addition to their high performance, their extension to the multivariate case would be easy. In this project a solid oxide fuel cell coupled with a gas turbine has been selected. It is modelled in MATLAB environment and performance of the process has been evaluated in an open-loop mode. The controlled variables are temperature and cell voltage, and manipulated variables are fuel flow and electric current density. First, two proportional-integral controllers were designed, then by using linearization at steady state point (state-space model), a multi-variable model predictive controller was designed. In the next step, a multi-model predictive control was designed. Several linear models (9 models) were identified at different operating conditions to use these models in the associated controller. Finally, the performance of these three controllers was assessed. The simulation results indicated that the multi-model predictive controller acted more appropriate.
