An Investigation of the Mediating role of Organizational Cynicism on the Relations between the Politics Perception and Organizational Commitment

  8. There is no consensus definition of cynicism in literature. In this research different definitions of cynicism have been investigated and two concept of organizational cynicism and trait cynicism have been taken into consideration. Organizational cynicism is a negative attitude that is prevalent in employees. In literature some antecedents and consequences of organizational cynicism have been suggested. It seems organizational cynicism can be investigated in a more complex relations. The focus of this research is on the mediating role of organizational cynicism on the likely relations between politics perception and organizational commitment. That is to say organizational cynicism can explain how two concepts are correlated. In this case, politics perceptions may increase organizational cynicism, and in this way may decrease organizational commitment which means employees will have less tendency to continue membership in organization. Moreover, the role of trait cynicism has been taken into account in this relations. Because not much can be done to change trait cynicism therefore determining the role of trait cynicism in development of these concepts will influence the effectiveness of techniques for managing these negative attitudes. In this survey, the data collected from two organizations. Totally 245 responses have been analyzed by exploratory factor analysis and regression in order to test hypothesizes. By these analysis, the mediating role of the cognitive dimension of organizational cynicism on the relations between politics perception and affective commitment and the relations between politics perception and cost continuance commitment was found. Also two other dimensions of organizational cynicism (affective and behavioral) was investigated and tested. Because though in literature organizational cynicism has been defined a three dimensional construct, there is a little research about antecedents and consequences of different dimensions of this construct. In this research different antecedents and consequences was found for different dimensions of organizational cynicism, which can be worthwhile. For future research, it seems investigating the mediating role of other dimensions of organizational cynicism (affective and behavioral) can be valuable
