  7. Abstract:
  8. Khorjini connection is a type of connection in steel frames, in which the beam remains continuous at the intersection with column. In its ordinary form, this beam is connected to the face of column section using upper and lower angles. This type of connection is frequently used in construction of steel frames in Iran due to economic advantages and ease of fabrication. However since it is rarely used in other countries, its behavior and method of design is not described in international references and standards. The failure of the connections is a dominant type of seismic fraction in a building (The main reason of structural failures in Manjil and Roudbar earthquake – 1990). Contrary to the designers’ thought, extensive researches have demonstrated that the common Khorjini connections have not hinge performance and it shows hardness against a rotation. Created bending moment makes a twisting moment resistance against twisting and it has very low ductility against the rotation. Moghaddam - Pirayehgar studies (2006) and Moghaddam - Erfani studies (2012) showed that the failure of the angles’ welds due successively to the stress concentration in the range of initial elastic and strain jump in the wide range of plastic. In order to avoid the appearance of strain jump, this research discusses an approach as ‘Avoiding approach’. In this method, instead of increasing the capacity of the internal force, the target is to reduce the size of the internal force. Implementation details of this Khorjini connection are based on the replacement of the angle with strong vertical thin plates and they make a hinged connection. Two types of hinged Khorjini connection are modeled: 1-Hinged Khorjini connection with soft seat, 2-Hinged Khorjini connection with hard seat. To determine the rotation and moment corresponding to the initiation of failure of the joint in the analytical model is used Micromechanical method VGM. As this modifying in all models there has been a significant decrease in the moment to failure, rigidity percentage, initial stiffness, reduce the internal moment by use of ‘Avoiding approach’, in almost all model rotation to failure has increased in a comparison to common Khorjini connection. All parameters show the good performance of hinged Khorjini connection
