  7. Abstract:
  8. In this study preparation of polymeric membrane for grey water treatment is examined. Grey water is the wastewater that is produced by household activities such as baths, showers and sinks. These sources make 50 to 80 percent of total household wastewater. Because of low contamination of these kind of wastewater, they can be treated with Nanofiltration membrane process. Membrane used for treatment is thin composite polyamide membrane. This membrane is made with interfacial polymerization reaction of Piperazine and m-phenylenediamine as amine monomer and trimesoyl chloride as chloride acid monomer on a Polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. In order to promote the flux, Polyethylene glycol is used in preparation of Polysulfone membrane. The effect of preparation parameters like the ratio of two amine monomers, concentration of trimesoyl chloride and curing temperature was then studied in order to improve membrane’s performance for grey water treatment. Flux and sodium chloride and sodium sulfate rejection experiments as well as reduction in physical, chemical and biological characteristic of grey water like chemical and biological oxygen demand and also Turbidity was studied. In order to study the structure and polyamide layer formation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy and Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) was used along with contacting angle experiment.
Results show that increasing Polyethylene glycol concentration can lead to threefold increase in flux and at the same time an increase in sodium sulfate rejection from 83% to 97%. Also membrane prepared with 50 percent ratio of Amin monomer for grey water treatment can reduce COD,BOD and turbidity in the range of 88.1%, 90.3% and 94%. According to standards, this treated water can be used in flash tanks, washing cloth and irrigation. SEM images also demonstrate the formation of denser structure when using a blend of two Amin monomers
