  7. Abstract:
  8. In recent years passenger cars have been known as the main source of air pollution in urban areas. Despite all the research and efforts in minimizing the fuel consumption and emissions of internal combustion engines (ICE), this is merely a temporary solution. The permanent solution to overcome these disavantages is the use of electric vehicles (EV). The main downside of using electric vehicles is their short driving range. Multi-speed transmissions can be adopted to overcome this problem. Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) and infinitely variable transmissions (IVT) have been proven to enhance fuel economy in ICE vehicles and a great deal of research is being conducted to maximize their efficiency. In this research different powertrain configurations have been optimized with the purpose of minimizing the energy consumption of EV’s. First, the main components have been designed for conversion of a specific ICE vehicle. After comparison between different IVT arrangements, ones with promising characteristics in maximizing the efficiency will be selected. 1-speed, 2-speeds and IVT transmission’s ratios and gear change strategies have been optimized with the use of PSO algorithm and it has been shown that a 5.1% reduction is possible if a 2-speeds transmission is used
