  7. Abstract:
  8. There are different flow regimes in multiphase flows through the pipes, which affect the flow structure and other important fluid parameters. Each of these flow regimes are considered to be suitable or not in different industries. So it is needed to provide the situation of suitable flow regimes formation and to prevent the others from development. One of the main parameters affecting the flow regimes development is considered to be the passing flow’s channel section are or the pipe diameter. This project is defined to investigate the effect of changing pipe diameter on the formation of flow regimes in an air-water upward two-phase flow, experimentally. Therefore, a vertical pipe of 6 meters height with initial and final diameters of 0.06 and 0.20 meters, respectively, has been designed. Increasing the pipe diameter from the initial to the final height, has been done with a conical degree of 0.67. Hence, the vertical pipe has got a shape of tapered profile. In addition, it has been made of transparent acrylic glass due to the photography intention. After recording the passing flow regimes in 3 different pipe diameters of 6, 10 and 15 meters with a high speed camera, the flow regime maps of these 3 diameters were illustrated. The flow regime maps showed that the main flow regimes of the initial and final section areas are considered to be churn and slug-bubbly regimes, respectively. So it was concluded that utilizing tapered upriser pipe not only prevents the flow regimes from transferring to the next ones, but makes them stable in the vertical pipe and even transfers them in the reverse way. Airlift pump is a kind of pumping device which is based on injecting gas to the vertical pipe and is considered as an important industrial usage of two-phase flows. Therefore, as a supplementary to the main subject, an airlift pump with the mentioned tapered upriser pipe was designed to investigate the effects of tapering upriser on the airlift pump’s efficiency and performance for the first time. The results show an increase of up to 40 percent for the airlift pump with tapered upriser in comparison to the ordinary one. By considering the results of the flow regime map and the development of slug flow regime, the gained efficiency increase could be related to the flow regimes changing trend made by tapered upriser pipe. So it could be concluded that utilizing tapered upriser pipe instead of a constant diameter one, can improve the airlift pumps performance
