  7. Abstract:
  8. Progressive collapse occurs when the loading path of a structure is changed so that the other structural elements loaded beyond their capacity and fail. Generally, structural progressive collapse is categorized in different types based on the failure progress mechanism. Most dramatic progressive collapse occurred in 1968 at the Ronan Point residential apartment through an internal gas explosion. The type of progressive collapse of the aforementioned building was the Pancake collapse. Widespread efforts have been put to introduce a simplified static procedure to simulate the removal column phenomenon as in the Pancake collapse, which is a dynamic event involving vibration of building elements. In this regards, General Service Administration (GSA, 2003) proposed a dynamic amplification factor (DAF) equal to 2 for taking into account the dynamic effects. This study, investigating the efficacy of the DAF, considers variation of story height and span length. This is done through both linear and nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of 5 nine-story steel moment resisting frames in SAP 2000 software. As the results indicate, applying the DAF could be an appropriate alternate since the simpler linear responses of affected elements due to middle column removal scenario are considered. Determining the nonlinear responses shows that performance of the DAF might be conservative. The DAF might have the best performance for increased story height and span length. Increase in height that reduces the contribution of removed column stiffness and increase in span length that increases the dead load on the removed element lead to closely conservative responses
