  7. Abstract:
  8. The application of wet cooling towers is cooling the circulating water which in many processes extract the exess heat in the system. Any cooling tower involves different parts and one of these parts is packings. The effect of changing packing's charactorizations on the cooling tower's performance is significant and was studied in different researches. In this project the effect of packing roughness on the heat transfer, mass transfer and pressure drop in two arrays of packings and in different conditions of water flow rate, air flow rate and inlet water temperature was studied experimentally. For calculating and investigating the change of mass transfer coefitient, the Poppe model was applied and its equations solved by EES software. In array (I) the surface of packings was covered by two kind of sandpapers with different roughness. Changing of roughness in this array is notable and increasing surface roughness increased the efficiency, cooling range, cooilng load, mass transfer coefficient, rate of evaporation and pressure drop of packings. The effect of packing roughness on these charoctrizations in different conditions was also studied. In array(II) one of the commercial packings that has some kerves in its surface was used. For changing the surface roughness in this array the surface of packing was painted to decrese the depth of kerves. In this array depth of curves decrease from 2mm to 1mm. In array(II) changing the roughnesss is low and the heat transfer and mass transfer characteristics changing was negligible but pressure drop was increased after panting
