The Challenges in Iran for Successful Implementation of Directorial Patterns; Focus on PMBOK and PRINCE2

  8. Project Management has clearly designed to achieve a successful outcome of the projects. However, without a proper practicing, it might convey a different result. Companies are increasingly using organizational project management in their work to achieve company goals. The purpose of this study is to identify the challenges in Iran for successful implementation of directorial patterns based on the PMBoK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environment-2nd Version). This paper presents the results of a study aiming at investigating the impacts of implementing project management processes of PMBOK and PRINCE2 and themes within Iranian construction projects. Hence, the level of effectiveness of implementing 10 Project Management Knowledge Areas (PMKAs) and seven principles and themes of PRINCE2 were regarded as the base for this study. A field survey was conducted through a structured questionnaire including 116 employers, 178 contractors, 62 Consultants and 12 other parties like university's professors or students who are interested in this field in Iran. This survey is based on PMBOK and PRINCE2 that they are considered as the arm of the project management and are utilized as the standard and methodology in advanced countries. The objective of thesis is to identify the management requirements of the country from managerial aspect and identifying the existing problems and challenges. Then by determining the source of the problems, some solutions and advice for improving the efficiency, enhancing the performance of construction industry and strictly following the standards will be suggested. About 180 challenges were identified. Then 180 causes of challenges combined into 60 questions and ten major groups related to their sources as: (1) Project Integration Management, (2) Project Scope Management, (3) Project Time Management, (4) Project Cost Management, (5) Project Quality management, (6) Project Human Resource Management, (7) Project Communication Management, (8) Project Risk Management, (9) Project Procurement Management and (10) Project Stakeholders Management. Based on the quantified relative importance indices, the ten most important challenges and three most important groups were identified. To date, there is no comprehensive study that explores the important critical challenges in onstruction project based on PMBoK and PRINCE2. Thus, comprehensive studies in this field are necessary
