  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing global final energy demand and the use of fossil fuels to meet this amount of energy demand have raised concerns about environmental impacts of fossil fuel consumption and the reduction of fossil energy reserves. Among the energy consumer sectors including industry, transport activities, agriculture, and households, the household sector is one of the most important sectors, regarding its share of total final energy consumption. Heating and cooling systems, which mainly use fossil fuels, are the biggest energy consumers in the household sector. Hence, optimal management of the heating and cooling systems can play an effective role in reducing energy costs in buildings. In this regard, and due to the high potential of energy saving in the heating and cooling systems, the use of a simulation software is essential for optimizing energy consumption. In this project, first, the heating and cooling system, as well as the exterior and interior space of the building, are precisely simulated in the Design Builder software. In the next step, the simulation results are validated with real information. Then, the combination of Design Builder software and the genetic algorithm are used in order to find optimal boiler water temperature, chiller water temperature, and functional periods of the air handling unit. Energy engineering department at Sharif University of Technology is considered as the case study of this research. The results show that achieving optimal boiler temperature, chiller and functional periods of the air handling unit systems significantly reduce the energy consumption of the Energy engineering department at Sharif University of Technology
