  7. Abstract:
  8. Innovative small tech companies are required to often have cooperation with large companies in order to scale-up and commercialize their products. Such cooperation is referred as “Technological Cooperation” since it relies on development and commercialization of technology. In this research, as a multiple-case study in the arena of nanotechnology, five cases of technological cooperation are analyzed and key successful factors are identified. In this endeavor, 15 comprehensive interviews were conducted with both small tech companies and technology applicant companies, including experts of Nanotechnology Innovative Council (INIC) – playing the role of a mediator. Due to lack of a comprehensive model in the literature, especially by considering business environment of the country, we first tried to extract all contributing factors found in the literature and then to improve it through insights of selected cases. One of the key findings of this study suggests that the differences between sizes of the two cooperating companies alone is not probably an obstacle for cooperation. Specifically, strategic intentions based on “economic goals” and modularity level of the desired product are also quite important factors in cooperation. Another key finding of this study highlights concept of “common sense perception and trust”. According to this concept, the two cooperating companies need to understand each other in terms of their positions, conditions, requirements, wishes, goals, and processes. Based upon such a mutual understanding, they can strengthen their confidence by taking joint actions to increase chances of the success. While examining the cases, it became evident that presence of an intermediary can be more effective in resolution of disputes and filling the gaps in interaction of the two companies, than merely initiating their cooperation
