  7. Abstract:
  8. Structures with time-varying electromagnetic properties can potentially yield non-reciprocity, amplification, harmonic generation, and other interesting wave propagation phenomena. To date, some studies have dealt with time-varying media and circuits, including time-varying optical ring resonators having degenerate travelling wave resonances. In time-varying ring resonators, the clockwise and counter clockwise resonances lose their degeneracy, and non-reciprocity is observed. One of the main challenges of such research is the need to induce time-variations in the entirety of the resonator or structure, which makes their implementation very limited or impossible in practice. The purpose of this project is to investigate the possibility of achieving non-reciprocity in static resonators that only have time-varying boundary conditions. The novelty of using of time-varying boundary conditions, makes the structure more feasible in practice and at different frequencies from microwave to light. Therefore, in this research, our study focuses on general static Transmission Line resonators which are terminated by time-varying boundary conditions (e.g. periodically variable capacitor), as well as their method of analysis (using harmonic balance). The resonance frequencies and their harmonics, as well as voltage levels of each frequency, are calculated via several methods (similar to an eigenvalue problem) and convergence of the results were also investigated. The scattering parameters of the structure were derived to drive the structure and to observe non-reciprocity between ports. To increase non-reciprocity, several cases as well as coupled resonator structures were also studied. The theoretically derived expressions were also simulated using the MATLAB software. It was concluded that the structures studied herein are primarily capable of yielding strong non-reciprocity in the near harmonics of the center frequency
