  7. Abstract:
  8. This study examines the safety and economics concerns in seismic design of column splices in steel concentrically braced frames. The importance of column splices in steel frames is that in structures with high columns, due to the limited length of existing profiles or economic issues, we have to use column splices. Error in the design and implementation of the column splice can affect the stability and overall performance of the structure. In this regard, the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings has provided rules for designing column splices in the braced frame. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the criteria presented in the regulation and obtain seismic demand and extract the relationship for the rational, safe and economical design of the column splices in the steel bracing frame under a comprehensive nonlinear analytical study. In this study, three structures, 3, 9, and 20 stories steel concentrically braced were taken from the designs in the SAC project, first scaled to two-dimensional scale, and then a seismic design for the Los Angeles site. The ASCE7-16 regulations for the loading, the ASCE360-16 and ASCE341-16 regulations to design, the ASCE41-17 regulations for the evaluation of structures were usedIn order to the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis, an ensemble of 20 strong ground motions in the SAC project was used. These ground motions were scaled up for Los Angeles with a 2% processing probability in the 50 years, and eventually, these ground motions were applied to the structures. It was observed that in seismic columns, the bending moment demand are more and the shear force demand are less than the amount presented in the current seismic design provisions
