  4. Abstract:
  5. Understanding pile group behaviour is a critical key for geotechnical engineers. Nevertheless, there have been inadequate studies in the literature which tackle the many aspects of this important type of foundation. In this paper, a new and simple approach is presented for estimating group efficiency of drilled shafts installed in sandy soil under axial loading. This approach may prove handy for geotechnical practitioners in their pile group design decisions. The distinguishing point about this approach is its being less-conservative in comparison with the rather few previous equations available in the literature. The mathematical approach derived in this study is based on results from numerical modelling using ABAQUS software. Validity of the modelling approach was verified by comparing the results from the numerical simulation with those from full-scale load tests. Then, parameters governing single shafts and group behaviour were studied. The two factors which can influence group efficiency are arrangement of the bored piles (number of piles) and spacing. © 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
