  7. Abstract:
  8. Due to pollution and destructive effects on the environment, while consuming a large amount of fossil fuels that can be converted into high value-added products, gasoline cars are gradually replaced by electric cars. Modern electric vehicles are generally designed and manufactured on the platform of gasoline vehicles. In the present study, it is tried to design three models of electric vehicles based on the SAINA vehicle. Initially, for the first model, an electric motor instead of the SAINA gasoline engine is employed to provide the power required for the vehicle. Then, for the second model, two electric motors are used namely one in the rear axle and one in the front. The third model uses an electric motor on each wheel and eliminates the set of the gearbox and differential. In designing the electric vehicle with one motor, the gear ratios of the single- and double-speed gearboxes are optimized for minimization of the vehicle energy consumption, in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), using the PSO algorithm. The gear ratio and torque distribution are also optimized for the vehicle with two electric motors. The optimization results show that when there are two electric motors in the vehicle, the torque distribution among the motors is so important that its optimization can save about 15% energy consumption compared to the case where the torque is evenly distributed between the motors. For the case where the electric motors are mounted on the wheels, the energy saving is about 3.6%. It should be noted that the initial price of the electric car is about three to four times as much as that of a gasoline car with the same power. However, considering the price of gas and oil and environment and health effects, the overall benefits of electric vehicles are preferred
