  7. Abstract:
  8. Various types of tanks are used to store a variety of liquids, drinking water, chemicals, petrochemicals, and liquefied natural gas. Of these, one type is ‘elevated tank’ which is used to provide the required pressure for the water distribution systems rather than satisfying the water demand. Satisfactory performance of tanks during strong ground motions is crucial for modern facilities. Theoritical and experimental investigations of the dynamic behaviour of liquid storage tanks are conducted to seek possible improvments in the design of such tanks to resist earthquakes. The behaviour and performance of a new elevated tank was studied in this work. It was carried out through finite elements method, using available software. Models of the suggested design and its traditional counterparts were studied and compared. The study comprised three phases, 1- Regenerating the results of some previously studied systems. 2- Modeling the tanks without taking the fluid-structure interaction into account, by just applying the pressure of the liquid to the inner surfaces of the tanks. 3. Carrying out a more elaborate study by modeling the stored fluid and taking the fluid-structure interaction into account. All the three phases were studied using both 'static' and 'dynamic' analyses. The studies showed that the suggested tank has a better structural performance than the traditional designs. The maximum stress in the wall of the suggested tank was approximately 50% less than those in its traditional counterpart. The difference between the maximum static and dynamic stresses in the new design was marginal, showing its effectiveness under dynamic excitations. Finally, the author would like to acknowledge that the idea of this new elevated tank came from Dr. S.V.Khonsari, his supervisor in this project, and all the legal rights of this new idea belongs to him
