  8. Nowadays, proper design and retrofitting of structures against natural and manmade disasters, is among the main concerns of researchers and designers in order to reduce financial and human costs. Extensive research has been carried out on the structures resistance against earthquake up to now. Although, the vast amount of research has resulted various regulations and guidelines, there is still a long way ahead to achieve the desirable results. Due to high sensitivity of the steel to temperature variations, fire exposure is more destructive for steel structures compared with the concrete ones. The performance of an intermediate three-storey steel moment frame with 4 spans was studied in this thesis. To model and analyze the structure, ABAQUS finite element software is utilized. The performance of sample structure due to the service and thermal load and post-earthquake fire are compared. In order to apply the earthquake effect, a nonlinear static analysis is employed. The effects of passive fire-protection materials such as ordinary cement-based and fire-retardant coatings investigated. Changes in the stories deflection, endurance time and growth of nonlinear regions due to drop of steel stiffness and strength, are among the subject considered in this study. As an interesting finding, beams which are protected by ordinary cement-based coating could sustain the fire exposure at least for 30 minutes in all cases. The mentioned time is increased by employing new fire-retardant protection, where, there is no significant loss in the structure’s resistance against fire even after 60 minutes of exposure to fire
