  7. Abstract:
  8. Steel is a non-combustible material, but at high temperatures, steel structures, due to their diminishing yield strength, undergo a considerable visco-plastic deflection, which results in a reduction in their load bearing capacity. Thus, to increase safety against fire must be considered as an important objective in the design and construction of steel structures. One of the safety measures which can be taken against fire is to increase the resistance of the structure against heat by using heat-resistant coatings. This decreases the rate of transfer of heat to the structure, and must include the ‘structural members’ and ‘structural joints’. Due to the role of structural connections in maintaining the integrity and continuity of the whole structure, their protection against fire is of utmost importance. In recent years, the use of semi-rigid connections in the design of metallic structures has been increased substantially. The KHONSAR™ connection is one of these connections, which was studied in this work. At first, a 3D numerical model, based on the Finite Elements Methods (FEM), was made for the studied joints. These models were analysed at ambient emperature. The results of these analyses were compared with those of the tests, already carried out by the supervisor of the project, and showed a good agreement with them. Using the properties of steel at elevated temperatures, the behaviour of the connections at such temperatures was studied through the FEM and incremental elasto-plastic analysis. Finally, in order to study the role of various thermal insulating materials, available in the market, through a series of 2D finite elements models, the thermal behaviour of the insulated joints at various ‘exposure temperatures’ were studied and the effects of using such thermal insulator in reducing the temperature of the joints were studied
