  7. Abstract:
  8. Origin-Destination (OD) table is an important input for managing and controling processes of transportation systems. OD flow estimation based on the observations of traffic sensors is a famous way of attaining this table. Technology developments in recent years reduce the cost and improve the quality of the results for this method. This research explores the methods for applying one of these technologies, vehicle identification systems, with the purpose of OD flow estimation. In this research several location models for vehicle identification systems are presented. These models have better performances comparing to the existing models in the literature. Furthermore, location models for some specific practical location problems which have not been modeled before are presented. Specifically, it is shown that the existing location models in the literature do not consider the chronological order in which a vehicle is detected and as a result they do not yield the optimum solution. It is also shown that considering this chronological order improves the results considerably. The solutions of the proposed location models are proven to be optimal. Another contribution of this research is presenting location models for vehicle identification systems with the purpose of OD flow estimation; current models locate sensors with the purpose of path flow estimation. In this research also a location model is presented which considers the initial vehicle identification systems; this model is more practical and also easier to solve comparing to the models without initial sensors.A recently developed method for OD estimation has been applied to the real-world large example of Mashhad city. A new method for estimating the error of the estimated OD flow is presented. This method, comparing to the existing methods, has more reasonable assumptions and is more intuitive. Based on this method a new evalution method for the information yielded by a set of traffic sensors is presented; this method has been compared to the existing competing methods
