  7. Abstract:
  8. Poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as a fluorine polymer with acceptable thermal, chemical and physical property attractive create attention in membrane technology for water treatment application. However, with differential surface free energy between PVDF and water (∆G_s=30 mJ/m^2) PVDF polymer is divided as a hydrophobic materials, that is one of the basic problem for PVDF polymer. Due to its hydrophobicity the water molecules repulsion away from hydrophobic PVDF membrane surface as a spontaneous process with an entropy increasing and therefore pollutant molecules with hydrophobic functional group have tendency to adsorb onto membrane surface and dominate the boundary layer. In recent years many ways have been created and used for PVDF membrane surface modified, with temporary and low efficiency.During this study graphene oxide (GO) sheets are used for improving physical, surface and hydrophilic properties of PVDF membrane. because there are abundant oxygen functional groups like hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl and ketone on GO sheets surface GO divided as a hydrophilic material. In spite of another innovative way that often are expensive and finite, blending GO sheets with PVDF polymer can improved its inherent hydrophilic with good sustainability. So that pure water flux from 90 L/m2h in PVDF polymer reach to 450 L/m2h in PGO composite membranes and then improving membrane fouling resistance with formation a thin layer of water molecules on membrane surface. Behind of improving PVDF membrane hydrophilicity, the GO sheets can enhance the PVDF membrane physical property from 4.42 Mpa in pure PVDF to r10.53 Mpa in PGO composite membranes. Good homogeneous dispersion of GO sheets in PVDF polymer is one the important parameters during this study that characterization results like CA, XRD, EDX, FTIR, RAMAN, AFM and SEM indicate good dispersion of GO sheets in PVDF polymer
