PVP-PEG-BaTiO3 Hydrogels, Synthesis and Characterization for Medical Applications

  8. Today, hydrogels have various biomedical applications as three-dimensional networks with the ability to absorb and retain water and biological fluids. This study aimed to prepare nanocomposite hydrogels from polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol, and barium titanate nanoparticles. Gamma radiation at irradiation doses of 25 and 35 kGy was used as the hydrogel's crosslinking agent. The effects of gamma irradiation dose, percentage of polyethylene glycol, and barium titanate composition on the swelling ratio and gel content were investigated. It was observed that the amount of gel content with the addition of polyethylene glycol and barium titanate nanoparticles reduces the gel content and increases the swelling ratio. FTIR spectral analysis of the samples before and after irradiation showed that the polymers' nature was not changed by gamma irradiation. Examination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of the samples showed that the hydrogels synthesized from the mentioned materials are amorphous. From the rheology test results, it can be concluded that polyethylene glycol has a plasticizer role in hydrogels. The effect of increasing barium titanate nanoparticles on increasing the dielectric constant of polymer films in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 1 MHz was also investigated. By polarizing the samples containing barium titanate nanoparticles by 1kV / mm electric field for one hour and inducing piezoelectric property to the samples, the generated voltage was recorded by tapping the samples' surface; its values were recorded. It was found that generated voltage by compression and release depends on the percentage of barium titanate in the sample and hydrogel's water content
