  7. Abstract:
  8. At today’s crowded world, the importance of automobile transportation is obvious for all. The fossil fuel pollution crisis has increased the need for renewable-fueled engines with higher efficiency and lower emissions. Meanwhile, biofuels have received more attention for reasons such as carbon dioxide cycling, Affordability and availability. However, despite these benefits biofuels require crops such as corn or potatoes to produce, which in turn produce other environmental pollution. On the other hand, concerns have been raised as to whether the use of these fuels increases the amount of other pollutants, except for carbon dioxide, or not. Extensive researches in this field by experimental, or computational, and numerical methods on both diesel and gasoline engines to investigate the impact of biofuels on pollution and overall performance has proven that biofuels can be considered a viable alternative to fossil fuels. In this study, comparing gasoline and ethanol combustion was performed by computational fluid dynamics simulation. Accordingly, a spark ignited gasoline engine of a light-duty vehicle and its combustion and emission characteristics are investigated and compared in both gasoline and ethanol fueled states. The simulation results show that E50 has a positive effect on performance due to the higher octane number, more complete combustion process and higher evaporation latent heat. Although lower energy release of Ethanol, partially diminishes this positive effect, and if ECU and engine are not calibrated, there will be no significant changes in engine performance. The results of this study show that the maximum torque and power increase, the maximum pressure decrease and volume efficiency and fuel consumption increase, respectively. On the other hand, due to the oxygenation properties of ethanol, there is a sharp decrease in carbon monoxide pollutants, which has resulted in increased carbon dioxide emissions. This easier combustion due to the presence of oxygen atoms also reduces HC pollutants. But high temperatures and combustion characteristics of ethanol have led to a huge increase in the production of NOx pollutant
