  7. Abstract:
  8. In this study, the changes in the mean vector and the covariance matrix of engineering demand parameter (EDP) distributions for different intensity measures and ground motion selections is evaluated. Although, the changes in the mean distribution of EDPs have been extensively studied in the literature, but the changes in the covariance matrix of EDPs distributions caused by ground motion selections has not been paid the due attention. In other words, no study has specifically looked into the effect of intensity measure changes on the covariance matrix; therefore, for the purpose of this study, several steel frame models were considered with perimeter special moment resisting frames (SMRF). The models were allowed to behave nonlinearly using the modified Ibarra-Medina-Krawinkler (IMK) deterioration model. After validating the prepared models in OpenSees program, a set of ground motions was selected to perform nonlinear time history analyses. Eventually, the mean and covariance matrix of the EDPs are examined using MATLAB program. The results show that except for small intensity measures, the correlation of EDPs can be considered almost constant. Furthermore, the standard deviation changes for drift demand parameters are greater than those for changes in acceleration demand parameters. In other words, the changes in the drift demand parameters are more sensitive to the acceleration demand parameters which causes an error in calculating a covariance matrix for the acceleration and drift demand parameters simultaneously
