  7. Abstract:
  8. This study highlights an important distinction between heat transfer mechanism in dry and saturated soil. Soil temperature data recorded during model tests, soil thermal response predicted using finite difference and analytical methods are compared with finite element models. In recent years, due to the industrial development of human societies, the energy consumption has been increased worldwide. On the other hand, the most commonly used energy resources are non-renewable energies. Therefore, governments and industries aimed to develop a technology which provides economical use of renewable energy sources. One of the renewable energy sources is the geothermal energy of the Earth. In this regard, one of the most economical technologies to use the geothermal energy is exchanging heat from the Earth to the foundation of structures. For this purpose, during warm seasons of the year, geothermal piles transfer the ground surface heat to the soil with lower temperature, and during cold seasons, they bring up the thermal energy of the ground using a circulating fluid. In this study, the heat transfer mechanism in soil medium is investigated in different conditions using numerical modeling. Results reveal that heat transfer in saturated ground cannot be fully explained through conductive heat transfer mechanism, since the dominant heat transfer mechanism here is convection. If the conduction mechanism solely be considered, the results in high permeability soils show significant errors. On the other hand, the presence of groundwater flow increases the soil temperature at the downstream. In order to correctly interpret the heat transfer mechanism in saturated soils, both buoyancy-driven flow, which causes heat convection, and groundwater flow, which causes forced convection, should be considered. It should also be mentioned that, groundwater velocity and soil permeability are the most important parameters affecting the heat transfer through sandy soils
