  7. Abstract:
  8. The following dissertation discusses Ionic Liquids (ILs) as an alternative to commercial surfactants for use in the Enhanced Oil Recovery process. Ionic Liquids came to researchers’ attention due to their environmental nature and their tolerance for high temperatures and salinity. In this work, firstly, an extensive literature review is carried out, and then, experiments are designed and performed to evaluate ILs’ surface activity and performance in a lab-scale EOR set-up. The Ionic Liquids used in this work consist of three types of methylimidazolium nitrate, [MIM]+[NO3]-, with three different alkyl chain lengths. This combination, and specifically the effect of nitrate anions on EOR and surface activity of ILs, have never been investigated in any related articles. In this research, solutions of these ILs were prepared, and subsequently, interfacial tension tests and emulsion stability tests were carried out to make known their surface activity and their interaction with crude oil. Then, a glass micromodel flooding test was performed to simulate the EOR process for all three of these substances. Finally, the results were analyzed and interpreted, and the IL solutions’ performances were compared in the form of graphs and photos. In this work, we have successfully demonstrated high surface activity of these Ionic Liquids, and in addition, we have observed up to 80% oil recovery by them. Also, by examining the effect of high salinity and temperature on the performance of these ILs, it was concluded that not only are they resistant to these conditions, but their efficacy has been greatly improved
