  7. Abstract:
  8. Ethanol is one of the most important solvents in the industry with different applications in various fields, which can be used in disinfection solutions, perfumery, paints, fuels, etc. In this research, a predefined superstructure is examined to investigate the possibility of ethanol production by a process which has the lowest production cost per kilogram of ethanol.Various feeds can be used to produce ethanol, the most important of which are bagasse, wheat starch, sugar beet, sugar cane, corn and dextrose. In this study, the corn is selected as feed, while each of the above feed, and contains a different percentage of glucan, xylan and lignin. Conversion factor of components in superstructure have been assumed constatnt, and since there is no specific boundry for the studied variables in the process, the focus of the work is on the use of fuzzy optimization on variables that don’t have a range for boundaries. The result with these unbounded variables for the objective function is $ 0.77 per kilogram of ethanol produced. Then, using fuzzy optimization, the value of the objective function is reduced to $ 0.746 per kilogram of ethanol produced, although the reduction in cost is not very large. The optimization was performed in GAMS environment with a MINLP model and the BARON solver
