  7. Abstract:
  8. Traffic accidents around the world kill a large number of people every year, and their lightest consequences are temporary disabilities for citizens. According to the statistics, the number and severity of accidents have been growing, due to the expansion of cities and the human population there, and this increases the need to pay attention to traffic safety. One of the substantial subcategories of traffic safety research is public transportation. However, limited studies have been done in this field. One of the main modes of public transportation are buses, which bring more risk of accidents to passengers, due to their size and higher passenger capacity compared to passenger vehicles. However, the sustainable expansion of the urban bus network requires a deep understanding and more knowledge of the factors involved in urban bus accidents. This way, the policymakers and institutions responsible for urban traffic management can have more prominent policies in this field. This is more significant issue in developing countries. One of the basic traffic problems in cities is the safety of city buses, which causes a reduction in the sustainability of cities. As the safety of this mode of transportation decreases, its usage also decreases and the use of unsustainable modes of travel (such as the use of private vehicles) increases. In this research, we investigated various factors that affect the severity of urban bus accidents by studying the cases of Isfahan city. For this purpose, the data related to the buses of Isfahan city was taken from Isfahan city bus organization. In this research, we used the method of descriptive statistics and a logistic regression model to analyze the aforementioned data and assess the impacts of various factors on urban bus accidents. Finally, while analyzing the role of various factors, solutions related to improving the safety of the urban bus network and the reasons for aligning this development with sustainable urban development are discussed. According to the results, the severity of urban bus accidents will decrease by removing the median, drying the pavement, separating the bus lanes and PV lanes, and improving drivers’ education.
