  7. Abstract:
  8. Design and parametric study of a coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator system has been carried out based on thermoacoustic theories. The purpose of coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator design is to cool a container with small dimensions for use in cold storage above zero. The application of this refrigerator is where the waste heat of piston engines of distributed generation (DG) plants can be used as energy input. The design is based on the simplicity and low cost of the refrigerator. Therefore, the engine and refrigerator part of the coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator is enclosed in a resonator with a fixed diameter, which is closed on both sides of the resonator. Two standing-wave thermoacoustic refrigerator systems with different configurations have been designed and analyzed for specific operating conditions, and the results have been compared with the traveling-wave thermoacoustic refrigerator. The traveling-wave refrigerator has a higher coefficient of performance than the two standing-wave refrigerators. The purpose is to design the refrigerator with the highest performance, and a traveling-wave refrigerator driven by a standing-wave engine is selected for the final design. Working fluid is air at pressure of 1 MPa, and operating frequency is 60 Hz. The geometric parameters of the stack and regenerator, as the heart of the thermoacoustic system, are optimized for the maximum efficiency of the coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator system. This coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator with an input power of 800 W, is able to produce 163 W of cooling power at temperature of 273 K. The thermal to acoustic efficiency of the thermoacoustic engine is 12% and coefficient of performance (COP) of the Refrigerator is 2.3. The coupled thermoacoustic refrigerator has a total efficiency of 20%
