  7. Abstract:
  8. Increasing the power of a turbocharged diesel engine without changing main engine components is important in industrial applications, with economic benefits. The engine power can be increased by higher boost pressure. In this research, the turbocharged diesel engine performance improvement was investigated to increase the engine power. As a case study, the performance improvement of OM355A turbocharged diesel engine carried out. For this purpose, the engine was modeled in boost module of the AVL software. First, naturally aspirated OM355 and turbocharged OM355A diesel engines were modeled. Then the simulation results were evaluated in compare with engine tests data. Maximum difference in brake power of turbocharged engine is 2.9 percent, which shows good agreement. Then, turbocharged diesel engine upgrade investigations were carried out in two stages for 10 and 20 percent higher brake power and performance parameters were predicted. In order to choose a suitable turbocharger, the Garrett GT 4082 turbocharger tests were carried out in the Turbocharger Laboratory at Sharif University of Technology and characteristic curves were prepared. The engine matching procedure was implemented, which showed this turbocharger and the existing one on the engine, are acceptable for the engine new operating conditions. Examining the engine maximum pressure and temperature in the upgraded conditions, showed that they are within the limitation ranges. Therefore, it is possible to increase the power of the turbocharged diesel engine up to twenty percent without changing its main components. In this research, a method for maximum power improvement of a turbocharged engine was introduced and feasibility study was carried out with a case study
